A Friend’s Dream – Blog #2

I can’t think of anything better to write about then my friend, Besthines Davis, and the dream she dreamed and made happen on Sunday, December 8th in Birmingham, Alabama! Her dream was to put together a gospel concert series celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement. I had the honor of performing in her first gospel concert series in August in South Central, where the goal was to raise money to send African-American children from the church community to Birmingham, Alabama – where  they could learn more and appreciate the history of the civil rights movement, and the city where it was born. Enough money was raised to not only send some children to Birmingham, but also some of the performers from Los Angeles. What an accomplishment! I wish I could have been there. I’m told that all the singers, musicians, dancers and speakers raised the roof! It was a huge success. 162 people showed up and more love was poured out then could hold the state of Alabama.

The concert was also a tribute to Sarah Collins Rudolph, the fifth girl who survived the church bombing in Birmingham 50 years ago. Sarah was there with her husband, bringing it all home where the movement began. Besthines plans on two more concerts in 2014, one in Los Angeles and one in Birmingham. Her dream is to tour her concert series all over the country celebrating freedom and uniting all races. You go, girl! You did it!
